Hollywood Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport advises getting to the airport at least 90 minutes ahead to ensure parking, moving through security and getting to your gate on time. Passengers are advised to be picked up and dropped off at Terminal B.

Expect heavy traffic in and around streets leading to the airport.

Passenger Increase

Both LAX and Burbank are seeing an uptick in passenger flights over 2021 and 2019 (pre-COVID-19) levels.

LAX is reporting just over 5.8 million passengers flew in May 2022—a 43.94% increase over May 2021 when just over 4 million flew.

The number breakdown:

May 2022 domestic passengers: 4.45 million; 1.3 million international

May 2021 domestic passengers: 3.45 million; 597,000 international

Hollywood Burbank reports passenger totals up in 2022 over pre-pandemic levels for two months in a row—a 5.6% jump in the latest available figures:

April 2022 513,138 passengers

April 2019 486,027 passengers

This follows a 4.6% increase in March 2022 compared to March 2019.

The airport reports that 2019 was a record-breaking year with nearly six million passengers served. During April 2022:

  • Southwest Airlines served 347,480 passengers
  • Alaska Airlines served 41,865 passengers
  • Avelo Airlines served 32,703 passengers

In recent months, staffing shortages caused delays at Burbank when labor was in short supply in the control tower during May 2022.

San Diego

San Diego International Airport is seeing a 74% increase over 2021 passenger levels, but a 11% drop when compared to 2019 traffic.

During April 2022, there were 1.783 million domestic passengers and 59,000 international travelers compared to just over 1 million domestic in April 2021 and only 12,100 international fliers.

In April 2019, the airport served 2 million domestic passengers and 86,000 international travelers.

John Wayne Airport, Orange County

During May 2022, the airport served 1,003,510 passengers, an increase of 71.3% when compared with the May 2021 passenger traffic count of 585,735.

That’s more than a 1,000% increase over May 2020, but only a 6.5% increase over May 2019.

Construction Woes and News

Construction is making parking tough at San Diego International Airport so plan on arriving up to 2 hours ahead of your flight’s departure time.

Long Beach Airport has announced that Southwest Airlines will make daily non-stop flights to Nashville beginning Nov. 6, 2022.
