5 fun things to do in Clay County this weekend

Looking for something to do in Clay County this weekend, consider these events in Green Cove Springs, Orange Park and Fleming Island. Some of the events include free Easter egg hunts for the kids.

  1. Fairgoers are counting down to the final days of the Clay County Agricultural Fair in Green Cove Springs as the event ends at 9 p.m. Sunday.

Some of the highlights to check out include:

A talent show will be held on the Community Stage at 7 p.m. Friday. Check it out to see the winner of the fair’s Star Search contest. There are cash prizes and the winners will also receive a feature story interview and professional photo shoot with Folio Weekly 2.0. There will be two age categories: Youth – ages 14 & under and Adult – ages 15 & up.

The fair also is holding its first dog trick contest. The Youth Dog Trick Show begins at noon Sunday at the Livestock Pavilion. Registration has ended for the event. The dog owners had to be under the age of 18 to participate.

Along with the Midway rides, check out Circus Incredible at the E-Zone; tractor pulls at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Cattlemen’s Arena; and Disc-Connectted K9’s World Famous Frisbee Dogs, also at E-Zone.

  1. Before or after visiting the fair on Friday, you could also check out Food Truck Friday at Spring Park in Green Cove Springs. The event starts at 5 p.m. on the banks of the St. Johns River. The Cumberland band will perform.

Event organizers suggest you bring a cooler and a chair to enjoy the scenic park.

Spring Park is located at 106 St. Johns Ave., in downtown Green Cove Springs. The event ends at 9:30 p.m.

  1. Some free pre-Easter events are scheduled for this weekend.

The Advent Lutheran Church’s Easter Family Fun Festival will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday at 2156 Loch Rane Blvd. in Orange Park. The free event promises lots of games and an Easter egg hunt.

The Oakleaf Easter Market in Orange Park will be held on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event will be held at the Oakleaf Village Athletic Center soccer field, 370 Oakleaf Village Parkway.

Organizers say the Easter Bunny will make an appearance and pass around eggs.

On Sunday, River Christian Church’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 5900 US-17, Fleming Island.

Organizers say there will be egg hunts with 10,000 eggs, food trucks, “special Easter friends,” a DJ, bounce houses, a petting zoo and a photo booth. It is a free event.

4.The Orange Park Community Theatre will hold performances of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The theatre is located at 2900 Moody Ave, Orange Park.

Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in September 1937 during The Great Depression, the coming-of-age comedy focuses on Eugene Morris Jerome, a Polish-Jewish American teenager who experiences a search for identity as he tries to deal with his family.

5. Also in Orange Park, the annual dinner/auction gala, the Wizard of Paws, will be held Saturday at the Thrasher-Horne Conference Center from 5 to 9 p.m. Organizers say the gala has sold out.

The evening begins with a cocktail hour featuring the music of Tier 2 while you browse the treasures available in the Silent Auction. A dinner in the banquet hall follows.

Then at 7 p.m. the live auction takes place, featuring Wizard of Paws auctioneer Bradley Bean.

The gala is a fundraiser for Safe Animal Shelter in Middleburg, Clay County’s oldest no-kill shelter. In 2020, Safe Animal Shelter found homes for 1,602 homeless animals. And in 2021, 1,970 found homes.
