Here's a recipe for cinnamon swirls, a healthier version of the classic cinnamon rolls:

For the Dough:

  • 1 packet (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (or a mix of whole wheat and all-purpose flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Filling:

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (or a sugar substitute like erythritol)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil or butter (or a dairy-free alternative)

For the Glaze (optional):

  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (or a sugar substitute like powdered erythritol)
  • 1-2 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, almond milk, honey or maple syrup, applesauce, and Greek yogurt. Mix well.
  3. Add the Flour: Gradually add the whole wheat flour and salt to the wet ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  5. Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
  7. Roll Out the Dough: Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Add the Filling: Brush the melted coconut oil or butter over the surface of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the oiled dough.
  9. Roll It Up: Carefully roll up the dough tightly, starting from one long edge. Pinch the seam to seal.
  10. Cut into Swirls: Slice the rolled dough into 1-inch thick swirls using a sharp knife or dental floss.
  11. Bake: Place the cinnamon swirls in a greased baking dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  12. Make the Glaze (optional): In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar, almond milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon swirls.
  13. Serve: Enjoy your skinny cinnamon swirls while they're still warm!

These skinny cinnamon swirls are a lighter alternative to traditional cinnamon rolls, making them a perfect treat for those looking for a healthier option.
