2024-01-29

In a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, a spotlight was shone on An Unlikely Story, an independent bookstore located in Plainville, Massachusetts. The owner of the store, Jeff Kinney, who is also a New York Times bestselling author known for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, was featured alongside a devoted fan of his work.

The segment started with Kelly Clarkson introducing Jacob, a young aspiring writer and a huge enthusiast of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Clarkson highlighted Jacob's deep knowledge and appreciation for every detail in Kinney's books. Clarkson then explained that Jacob was unaware that Jeff Kinney, the author of the series, was present and had an offer that Jacob couldn't refuse. The author extended an invitation to Jacob to visit the studio where the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are written! "I have a studio in Plainville, Massachusetts, in my bookstore, on the top floor, and I would like to invite you to spend time with me in the studio, draw on my computer, talk about books and talk about your books. Does that sound like a good idea?" Jacob enthusiastically accepted the invitation, saying, "Yes!"

On the day of the visit, cameras captured the memorable encounter between Jacob and Jeff Kinney as they explored the Massachusetts bookstore. "I'm really excited to be here at An Unlikely Story," said Jacob. His excitement was palpable as Jacob explored the store and studio, with Kinney surprising him by placing a copy of Jacob's own book, "John Vs The Glip Of Glorps," on one of the shelves. Jacob's delight was evident as he discovered his own work on the shelf. In an interview afterward, Jacob excitedly explained the moment, stating "Jeff tells me to pull out this book, and it's MY book! John Versus The Glip Of Glorps!” Kinney, witnessing the joy of a young fan seeing his work in a bookstore explained, “It was really exciting seeing Jacob find his book on the bookshelves, I think he sees he could become a published author.”

The segment continued with Jacob exploring An Unlikely Story, along with the upstairs Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Studio, which includes Twisted Wizard, a video game straight out of the books, statues of the main character Greg, and even a futuristic-looking wall-to-floor digital fish tank! Jeff Kinney also invited Jacob to help him design the cover of an upcoming book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

After the visit to the bookstore, Jacob and Jeff appeared back on The Kelly Clarkson Show for a short interview, where Clarkson asked the young fan what his favorite part of the visit was. Jacob couldn't pick just one thing, saying "My favorite part was when I walked into the studio and saw the giant 'welcome Jacob' sign, when I beat Jeff Kinney at his own video game, when I saw my own book on the shelf, and when Jeff let me help out with the cover of his next book."
