“Dude, do you see what I’m seeing?”

As we casually strolled down the sidewalk, I looked over to my friend to confirm he too saw the gladiator of a man running towards us.

His chest was chiseled, his abs were defined, and his stride was smooth and quick like he was levitating instead of running.

As he motored down the street, we weren’t the only ones to take notice. Countless other people did a double-take to confirm their eyes weren’t misleading them.

Seeing how other people looked at him I was instantly motivated. I wanted that for myself.

Right then and there, I decided that I was going to get in incredible shape. I wanted to be a gladiator of a man. I wanted to turn heads as I effortlessly ran down the street.

To be quite honest, this wasn’t my first “I’m going to get in great shape!” moment. I’d had my fair share of failed attempts in the past.

But for some reason, this one felt different. Equipped with the knowledge of what didn’t work and my new gladiator-fueled motivation, I was confident that this time I’d be successful.

My past attempts didn’t stick because I tried to do too much too soon. I was so motivated that I attempted to overhaul my life in one day and burnt myself out.

Instead, my plan was to stay modest and slowly ease my way into it. I needed to build the habit first, before building muscle or endurance.

With the image of my new hero fresh in my mind, the first few weeks were a breeze. I was incredibly motivated and it was easy to stick with it.

However, as time went on, my motivation slowly faded. The inspiration I once felt had all but disappeared. But, because I took the time to build the habit of working out first, I was able to continue towards my goal.

Motivation will come and go. While it’s helpful to get started, we can’t rely on it to propel us forward all the time. And all too often, motivation leads us down an unsustainable path of doing too much too soon.

While our intentions are good, major overhaul changes like this are usually difficult to stick to and unsustainable in the long run.

The most effective exercise plan is the one you’ll actually stick to.

Going from 0 to 100 in one day is a sure-fire way to burn yourself out. You have to give your body time to adapt. You have to build a habit before you can build a chiseled chest or a rock-solid core.

If the goal is to get in better shape, the training method isn’t as important so long as you can stick with it for a long time. Consistency matters more than how much or what kind of training you’re doing.

If the goal is to lose weight and get in better shape, consistency above all else is the best strategy.

I get it. When the motivation strikes, you want to take advantage of it and let it propel you forward. But keep in mind, the goal is consistency over a long time. If you don’t think you can sustain the workouts at the current level, then dial it back a bit.

One workout won’t make or break you. Consistently working out over weeks, months, and years will.

Rome wasn't built in a day. And neither are rock-hard abs or a chiseled chest. It takes time, consistency, and dedication. Find a training method you enjoy, stay consistent, and the results will come.
