Welcome back to DestinationHamzic. Today we look at a spot that is a must-visit if you’re in San Diego or anywhere nearby in California. The beautiful and small, but packed with adventure, Ja Jolla neighborhood.
La Jolla is a hilly, seaside neighborhood within the city of San Diego, California, occupying 7 miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean.
FEED YOUR TASTE BUDS
Along the main walkway, there are plenty of spots to enjoy a good meal, with a view. Some great restaurants in the area include NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar, The Cottage, and Harry’s Coffee shop. The food here is great and I really don’t see you going wrong with any other choice. On our last visit, we ate at Duke’s. They offer local cuisine with some Hawaiian favorites that I loved. For dinner time munch on some great Italian food at Piatti, add some Mediterranean flare at the Catania restaurant or have some Prime Seafood at Eddie V's.
CAVE STORE (BOOTLEGGER’S TUNNEL)
After getting a bite to eat, your next stop needs to be the Cave Store, which sits on top of a century-old bootlegger's tunnel that leads through the sandstone cliffs of La Jolla Cove into Sunny Jim’s Sea cave. It’s a 145-stair steep descent into darkness so be prepared and it does get very slippery and narrow. When you exit into the cove though, it’s an amazing sight of the rough ocean waves hitting the rocks. Be sure to check online for availability because they do get booked, and you might have to schedule in advance.
PHOTO AT THE CLIFF’S
Right next to the Cave Store is a nice cliff with beautiful panoramic views that make for some great photos. Avoid the seagull poop and the unstable ground, that may fall into the rocky ocean below any minute and enjoy the horizons. It’s also a great sunset spot.
LA JOLLA COVE (SEALS)
If you continue walking the pathway to the left of this cliff you will get to La Jolla Cove which offers a fun little beach with seals nearby, lots of benches, and the Ellen Browning Scripps Park. If you have never been to La Jolla and just want 1 spot to hang out at, this is it. Nearby is also the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park which offers good snorkeling spots with protected marine life and leopard sharks.
Ja Jolla is small but it’s an amazing day adventure, packed with stunning sights and plenty of seals, you shouldn’t miss it.
