My family and I went down on the Purgatory trail near the Ski Resort at San Juan National Forest. We spent about 50 minutes camping near the creek where we tried out our basic cooking system for camping. The trail starts with a steep decline on its way to the creek which means its a steep incline on the way out. This makes it a bit tough for an older, somewhat novice hiker like my parents, but it was worth it! I suggest taking a right turn at the first fork and then a left at the next that will take you directly to the creek and then leads back to the main trail. Its uphill again after leaving the meadow along the creek onward to the finish and the camp but I turned around at the 3 mile point since my family was exhausted, but many completed the 5 mile! Hopefully the next time I come, I get to finish this! It has peaks in the distance, meadows forests and the beautiful river further. If you have the time, go to the fall 5 miles out and get to the bridge over the river, spectacular!
