Sound of Music debuts Friday at The Island Theater in Fleming Island

On Friday, the Island Theater in Fleming Island continues their 2022 season with “The Sound of Music”.

“The Sound of Music” is based on the 1949 memoir “The Story of The Trapp Family Singers. The musical is about a young postulant in Austria named Maria who is sent to the home of a retired naval officer to be a governess to his seven children. After marrying the officer, Maria finds a way with her new family to survive losing their home to the Nazis. “The Sound of Music” is playing through June 26.

Showtimes start at 7:30 p.m., except on Sundays when the start time is 2 p.m.

The 2022 season continues with “Doctor Doolittle” on July 8. The play is based on a series of children’s books by Hugh Lofting. It’s about a doctor who has a special gift for talking to animals. The play runs through July 17.

“The Lightning Thief Musical”, based on the popular teen book “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Lightning Thief”, begins Aug. 5. It’s about a teenager who discovers he’s the descendent of a Greek god and sets out on an adventure to settle an on-going battle between the gods. It runs through Aug. 14.

“Something Rotten” begins Sept. 16. The musical comedy, set in 1595, tells the story of the Bottom Brothers who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the popular William Shakespeare.

It runs through Sept. 25.

“Little Shop of Horrors” begins Oct. 21. The musical is about a shy flower shop assistant Seymour who falls in love with his co-worker Audrey. After a lunar eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant in the shop that feeds on human flesh and blood. It runs through Oct. 30.

Cheaper by the Dozen begins Nov. 11.The play is based on the semi-autobiographical book about Tom and Kate Baker, who struggle to raise 12 children. It runs through Nov. 20.

The season ends with the classic tale “A Christmas Carol” beginning Dec. 16. Based on the book by Charles Dickens, the play tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, and the spirits of Christmas past, present, and yet to come. It runs through Dec. 23.

The theater also offers summer workshops for kids and teens. The cost of a workshop is $225. “Newsies Jr.” performances are July 29 through July 31. “Little Shop of Horrors” Fall Teen Workshop begins Aug. 23, for ages 12-19. Performances are from Nov. 3-6.

“Matilda Jr.” Fall Mixed workshop is for ages 5-19, with three sessions to choose from. Performances are Dec. 3-4.
