Germany is known for its enchanting landscapes and marvelous architectural complexes that each year welcome and make millions of visitors fall in love. Germany is one of the states with the most castles in the world: it has almost more than 25,000! Of these, 20% still have a roof, and 40% are in ruins.
Anyone who has ever been to Germany knows that coming across castles of incredible beauty is not a difficult task at all. Whether you are in Germany it does not matter, you will always find a “Schloss” that is worth a visit.
However, since Instagram has existed, German castles have become a destination for content creators who give space to their creativity, to immortalize them with photos and videos. Are you curious to know what these castles are? So let's go!
1) Neuschwanstein Castel
The Neuschwanstein Castle, built in the 19th century, stands on the top of a hill close to the border with Austria.
This castle is famous all over the world, because it inspired Walt Disney for his magical and iconic castle. Disney was so fascinated by it that he chose it as a model for its animated films, such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. It is therefore not surprising at all that it is one of the most visited castles in all of Europe: here reality truly exceeds fantasy. To discover all the secrets it holds we recommend taking part in one of the guided tours.
It can be reached by feet via two routes: the first one being easier and lasting 30 minutes, the second one being more difficult and, for those who love walking, lasting 1 hour.
2) Hohenzollern Castle
Hohenzollern Castle in southwestern Germany dominates the surrounding landscape from an altitude of 885 meters on the top of Mount Hohenzollern.
It is one of the largest castles in all of Germany! The building was built on the ruins of two previous castles in the mid 19th century. The richly decorated interior and the view of the plain below literally leaves you breathless. Once arrived you can see it from below, the sight gives unforgettable shivers.
3) Burg Eltz
Burg Eltz is one of the best known castles on Instagram. It is a very popular destination for content creators, as it has a really suggestive atmosphere, especially on Halloween.
This castle stands both on a rocky cliff and in a valley in the middle of the Eltz forest, a beautiful nature reserve, full of rare plants and animals. In addition, there are several trails for easy or demanding hikes in its vicinity, including the fantastic "Eltzer Burgpanorama", awarded as the most beautiful hiking trail in Germany.
It is still owned today by the same family that lived there from the 12th century, 33 generations ago, the Eltz. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful German castles.
