CONNECTICUT: As the retail industry in the United States faces a series of challenges, another significant name has been added to the list of businesses grappling with the shifting landscape. Renowned retailer Soft Surroundings, popular for its women's apparel and accessories, has declared bankruptcy.
The retail giant, founded in 1999, sought refuge under Chapter 11 bankruptcy,Chapter 11 bankruptcy, aiming to gain protection from its creditors. With nearly 650 employees spanning its headquarters and numerous stores, the decision marks a significant moment in the retail sector.
Soft Surroundings opened its doors to the public in 2005, establishing itself as a beloved brand offering curated selections of apparel, home essentials, footwear, and accessories. However, the changing dynamics of the retail world have pushed the brand to transition to a digital space. As all 44 of its brick-and-mortar outlets prepare to shut down, Soft Surroundings' online domain is set to be acquired by Coldwater Creek, another familiar name in the retail sphere.
In a heartfelt statement, Executive Chair Bridgit Lombard said, "Over the past year, we've made strategic decisions to secure Soft Surroundings' financial future. Our aim has always been to ensure the brand's longevity for our loyal customer base and partners. This restructuring will empower us to adapt and come back even stronger."
Employees of the brand have echoed sentiments of melancholy, as they come to terms with the changing reality of the retail industry. Susan Bahl, a sales associate, commented, "It's a sad testament to the struggles of traditional retail outlets. The charm of Soft Surroundings will surely be missed."
Connecticut's Grand Finale
The brand had previously closed 20 outlets last year, with the remaining 44, including the Connecticut store, expected to close by February 2024. Preceding this announcement, a WARN notice was filed in July, revealing that 79 employees at the brand's distribution center would be let go.
The store located at 98 Evergreen Way, South Windsor, CT 06074, has kicked off an epic final sale, offering massive discounts up to 80%.
Retail's rocky road in recent times has seen a multitude of store closures, with names like Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning, and even giants like Walmart feeling the heat.
