What is "Totems" art?
When one hears "Totem" they may think of Totem poles, which are monumental carvings, a type of Northwest Coast art, consisting of poles, posts or pillars, carved with symbols or figures.
For this event, "Totems" is a universal form of visual storytelling, using natural elements, that are built to bring community together around beliefs, truths, and experiences of the natural world. There is an intrinsic feeling of love and awe in their imagery and stature.
In this exhibit, Ann Nicholson Brown and Mindy Green have gathered elements of nature, with an emphasis on trees and wood, to create totems using photo collage, painting, and sculpture. Their love of the natural world guides their hands to create new relationships, arranging and connecting pieces together in unexpected ways. The artists applaud the origin, honor the diversity while tenderly coaxing them into an integrated whole. Each is a totem, a unique layered story carrying a message that perhaps it is possible that we can all coexist in harmony, unified, accepting our differences, as we stand tall in awe of our planet.
The art will be for sale and 30% of all sales will be donated to the Darien Nature Center.
