"Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., took to the Senate floor on Thursday and talked about how a bipartisan gun control measure being considered by the Senate could have had an affect on high-profile gun crimes that have been committed in the state. Heinrich was part of a bipartisan team of enators who negotiated the bill in the wake of horrific mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde,Texas." —Ryan Boetel

Senator Heinrich's Remarks on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

Thanks, in part, to Senator Heinrich's actions, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act has now been passed by congress.

At a local level, this is good news, because it will provide funding and training to make red-flag laws more effective, saving many lives.

"Red flag law: a law allowing courts to prevent people who show signs of being a danger to themselves or to others from having access to firearms (as by ordering the seizure of weapons)." —Merriam-Webster

Tragically, a devastating number of individuals have been killed in our state because these laws have been underused for so long.

"New Mexico’s senior senator said the gun control measure provides funding and training to make those types of laws, sometimes called red-flag laws, more effective." —Ryan Boetel

Fortunately, President Biden will be signing the Safer Communities Act on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

"President Joe Biden will sign a bipartisan bill to address gun violence into law Saturday before departing for Europe, the White House announced Friday. The bill amounts to the first major federal gun safety legislation in decades and marks a significant bipartisan breakthrough on one of the most contentious policy issues in Washington. The House on Friday passed the bill by 234-193, including 14 Republicans voting with Democrats. The Senate passed the bill in a late-night vote Thursday." —Clare Foran, Kristin Wilson, and Annie Grayer
