The fires in The Bosque were set by a woman intentionally it seems.
Officers reportedly witnessed her starting them.
"Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said the helicopter unit helped find the woman shortly after 10 a.m. in the bosque area of Second SW between Southern and Woodward." —Elise Kaplan
The woman has now been taken into custody.
“Responding officers witnessed her igniting a fire, and they took her into custody,” Gallegos wrote in an email. —Elise Kaplan
Who knows what this woman was thinking, feeling, or experiencing in her life for her to do something like this? Perhaps she was in deep pain; perhaps she was bored, angry, or exasperated.
Regardless, her behavior has affected the community in a negative manner, and she is now facing the consequences of that.
This act has also hurt a state that is already fragile, suffering from blazes in many areas, one of which is the largest in New Mexico's history and it has probably had a very negative impact on all of the animals in The Bosque: A beautiful haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Carlos Hernandez, 70, was running on the bosque trails when he saw the fire and, along with another man, attempted to put it out. He said he then saw police rush past him and take a woman into custody. Hernandez said it was sad to see the fire and he urged everyone to be alert and careful. —Elise Kaplan
Unfortunately, it seems like the Land of Enchantment is taking a beating this year.
“New Mexico is beautiful but with all the fires and everything the bosque is one of the last strongholds we have close...It’s a beautiful place, there’s a lot of wildlife out here. When I saw the fire I was thinking of all the porcupines, the animals…” —Carlos Hernandez
Hopefully, this woman will heal from whatever caused her to commit such an act, and we can all work together to preserve our majestic environment moving forward.
