How to Dress Great on a Budget

Daniela Ramos

Dreaming of dressing like a rock star but your wallet says otherwise? Dressing great doesn't have to cost an entire paycheck and there are many, many ways to get unique items for just a few bucks.

From hitting up thrift shops to throwing exchange parties, here are some ideas to get yourself a brand new wardrobe without breaking the bank! Not only is this an amazing way to get a few new (and unique) pieces, but it's also a surefire way to save the environment (fast fashion is one of the world's biggest pollutants, after all)!

Throw a Clothing Exchange Party with Your Friends

Get together with a group of friends and throw a clothing exchange party. What this means is that each member will bring out clothes they no longer want and exchange them! You can easily obtain a complete seasonal wardrobe at one clothing exchange party.

Treat this like a real party: have some fun, serve a few drinks and snacks, and party punch, play music. Break the clothing down into two distinct groups: clothes that are expensive designer fashion and those that are moderately priced and exchange away!

Any clothing that is leftover can easily be donated to a local charity group or the Salvation Army.

Consignment Shops

Visit consignments shops in upscale neighborhoods. Often, clothing that has never been worn or worn just once is left here! Here’s how it works: The consignment store owner provides a place for the merchandise to be sold in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Many items are designer wear and great finds for prices you won't be able to get anywhere else (These items often sell for less than half their original price). Seriously, you won’t leave empty-handed!

Auction Sites & Apps

Online auction sites are a great place to search for designer wear at very low prices or to find great clothing bargains. Often, these clothes were never worn by the seller and are in great condition. Many sellers bundle clothes in batches for very low prices, which means you can get a really great bang for your buck!. Get in on the action at eBay and place a bid for a few fabulous finds!

Moreover, there are also plenty of apps out there where you can buy pre-loved items. If you're not super keen on going to a thrift shop right now or there aren't any where you live, you can easily browse around these apps and find great items for amazing prices and have the seller ship them directly to you!

Local Thrift Shops

Thrift shops used to have a bad reputation, but now they’re totally in style! I mean, thrift shopping isn’t just for those on a low budget, it’s also a great place to shop for those who are tired of the toxic fast-fashion business and they’re also an amazing spot to find unique items no one else has!

Visit a thrift shop in your own neighborhood for a few good finds. Often, brand new clothing might be obtained at these shops for low prices. This is a great way to find a few fashion accessories like belts, ties, scarves, jewelry, too!

Friends & Family

Someone's trash might be a treasure for you, so don't be afraid to ask your friends and family if they plan on throwing out any clothes they might no longer need (this works especially great during the spring when lots of people do cleaning and organizing!). Not only can you get new, unique outfits, but you can also upscale any pieces of clothing and make them brand new!

The journey has been full of highs and lows of all sorts – of grand adventures, heartbreak, self-discovery, screw ups, and lonely roads. I wouldn’t change any of it. While I’m no longer traveling full-time anymore and I am now based in the wonderland that is Mexico City, you’re more likely to find me in some far-off place than at home. I’m a firm believer in the law of attraction, and I hope my stories inspire you to take the leap and follow your dreams!
