Bipartisan Group Looks to Revamp Arizona Elections in New Push

Daily News Now

A bipartisan group has launched a new push to try and revamp what Arizona elections look like ahead of the 2024 election could feature a rematch between former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden, a matchup that ended incredibly close in the Copper State in 2020.

The group now is looking to implement several changes to the election process in Arizona, specifically targeting the state's primary election system in an attempt to make it more fair and promote participation from those that do not entirely align with the two major parties.

Group Looks to Bring Election Reform to Arizona

The Make Elections Fair Committee has launched a campaign to garner support for their aptly named Make Elections Fair Act, which the group says will bring more fairness and group participation to Arizona elections.

"It’s time we fixed an election system that discriminates against the majority," Sarah Smallhouse, chair of the Make Elections Fair Committee said in a statement. "Our taxpayer-funded elections should give all voters in Arizona the same opportunity to participate."

The act would create an amendment to the Arizona Constitution that would eliminate taxpayer-funded partisan primaries, creating an open primary where voters would be free to vote for any member of any party.

The state legislature is tasked with determining how many candidates would advance to a general election, with ranked-choice voting deciding the victor if there are more than two advanced to the general.

Under the ranked-choice method, voters would put the order in which they prefer candidates. If no candidate gets a majority, then the lowest vote-getting candidates are removed one by one, and their second-choice votes are given to the other candidates until there is one with over 50%.
