A former Major League Baseball star and prominent figure in the state is reportedly considering a bid for the U.S. Senate in 2024, aiming to take over the seat currently held by Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who will not be seeking reelection following the end of her current term.
Now, the former baseball All-Star looks to join a field that already centers on several high-profile candidates, with his possible entry posing a unique curveball to an already crowded field.
Former MLB Star Looks to Throw His Pitch in Senate Race
Former Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Steve Garvey, who won National League Most Valuable Player in 1974, is reportedly "seriously considering" making a bid for the seat currently held by Senator Dianne Feinstein.
“He is seriously considering entering the race,” said Andy Gharakhani, an advisor to the former MLB All-Star, adding that Garvey is concerned about the state's "out of control cost-of-living and high taxes, rising crime and lack of opportunities.”
Garvey Entry Throws Curve Into 2024 Senate Race
Garvey's entry into the 2024 Senate race could introduce a very unique twist to the race, which already features high-profile Democrats Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee. And while Garvey is a Republican and is unlikely to actually win the race in such a Democratic-heavy state, his name recognition could carry him far enough in the state's primary to earn one of the two spots in the general election.
Under the state primary system, the top two vote-getters in the primary election move onto the general, regardless of party. So, Garvey could generate enough support to beat out a fairly weak Republican field, putting himself into the general against the Democratic favorite.
