One House Republican has become the first to publically call for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to leave his position after many within the party became outraged at what they have perceived as a bad deal in the Speaker's recently announced agreement with the White House on the debt ceiling.
McCarthy has been hit hard by members of the House Freedom Caucus following the deal's announcement, however, this latest action by his fellow member of the GOP signifies a possible shift in the caucus' trust in McCarthy, something that may not bode well following his concessions to become House Speaker.
New Debt Ceiling Deal Sparks Outrage from GOP
The newly announced debt ceiling deal, which was presented to the public over the weekend, has drawn swift criticism from some Republicans who view the agreement as a bad deal for the party following long negotiations.
The largest critique came from North Carolina Representative Dan Bishop, who reportedly called for Kevin McCarthy to be ousted as speaker during a House Freedom Caucus press conference.
“I think it’s got to be done,” Bishop told reporters after the press conference.
Rep. Bishop did not go as far as to say that he would file a motion to vacate the chair, which would prompt a vote to remove McCarthy from the speakership in the House.
“I’m just fed up with the lies, I’m fed up with the lack of courage, the cowardice,” Bishop said. “And I intend to see to it that there is somebody who’s prepared to say what needs to be done.”
McCarthy on Edge
Bishop, who was one of several who voted against electing McCarthy as House Speaker back in January, marks a growing movement within the party that is against the longtime California Republican's role atop the House.
And if one considers the concessions that McCarthy made in order to win the election for speaker, it is very possible that if Bishop's call gains traction within the party, we may soon see a move to kick McCarthy out.
