Earlier this week, a man was booked into the Coffee County Jail after reportedly shooting a man with whom he claimed to have had past issues and was currently following.
According to a copy of a Coffee County Sheriff’s Office report dated November 28, a sergeant was dispatched to the area of Burl Mill Road and Hickory Lane in reference to a gunshot wound. While en route, Coffee County E911 advised that they were informed that a man who had been shot was driving west on Highway 158 towards Douglas in a green SUV, and that the other caller was still on the scene at the incident location.
After a sergeant with the Douglas Police Department confirmed making contact with the vehicle driving west on 185 near Budget Car Sales, a deputy and EMS went to that location while the reporting sergeant continued on to the incident location.
Upon arrival at the location, per the report, the sergeant spoke to 37-year-old Antonio Guerrero Rivas. Rivas stated that he had left work at a business in Coffee County and noticed that he was being followed by a man he “used to have problems with in the past,” later identified as a 41-year-old man from Douglas.
Rivas stated that he had filed a report on November 14, 2023, in which the man had made threats to harm him. He also mentioned having documentation filled out in his vehicle to be turned into the courts for a protection order against the man.
According to Rivas, he turned onto Hickory Lane off Burl Mill Road, and the man passed him, parked his car in the roadway, and exited his vehicle. He stated that he went around the man, and when he did, the man hit his vehicle.
Per the report, Rivas said he then pulled out his firearm and fired several shots in the man’s direction, got back in his vehicle, and left the location. He then called E911, placed the firearm in the seat of the car, and stood outside, waiting for law enforcement to arrive on the scene.
At that point, Rivas was transported to the Law Enforcement Center to speak with detectives. Following questioning, Rivas was booked on one count of aggravated assault and has since been released.
