Mayor deems October 6 as National Dyslexia Awareness Day in Douglas and Coffee County

During the September 11, 2023, commission meeting, City of Douglas Mayor Tony Paulk officially proclaimed October 6, 2023, as National Dyslexia Day in Coffee County.

The proclamation was signed alongside Coffee County native and dyslexia advocate, Rihanna Lewis, highlighting the importance of raising awareness for dyslexia.

According to statistics, around one in ten people have Dyslexia, with 780 million people in the world having the diagnosis. Data also reports that among the 40 million plus adults that have dyslexia, only 2 million of them are diagnosed.

City officials also encouraged all citizens to become more aware of dyslexia and to engage in activities that create a culture of support, learning, understanding, and encouragement for residents with dyslexia.
