Samantha Nuñez, a 16 year-old native of Manati, Puerto Rico has been preparing herself for this moment for years aspiring to be a Nuclear Engineering Officer at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Nuñez received her Letter of Assurance in October, immediately after beginning her senior year at Robinson School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. "I have spent my whole life preparing myself to be the best candidate for the Naval Academy. It all began with Space Camp, that's where I fell in love with the Sciences," said Nuñez during an interview with TeleOnce.
She has the immense support of her family, which has done everything they can for her during the conquest of this dream. Her 4.7 G.P.A. and concept of teamwork learned on the basketball court won her acceptance to one of the hardest institutions to gain access to in the entire world. She is definitely a brave Puerto Rican that will get very far. Nuñez also states "to all the women out there, you can accomplish anything you want, whatever you put your mind to."
The nuclear engineering program prepares its graduates to assume responsibilities in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps which involve the operation and maintenance of highly technical systems. With a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, a Navy or Marine Corps officer is well prepared for a wide variety of career assignments both ashore and afloat. Operational sea billets in surface ships, submarines, surface nuclear ships, and aircraft squadrons provide a wealth of opportunities for a nuclear engineer to develop practical engineering experience. The knowledge and skills of those with a background in nuclear engineering are in demand in naval service and civilian life.
