(Colorado) Trolls, those mischievous creatures of folklore, have long captured our imaginations with their penchant for stirring up trouble. They dwell in secluded places and like to trick people, causing problems wherever they go (especially the pesky internet troll!).
But not all trolls are troublemakers. The ones created by Thomas Dambo are welcome guests.
Dambo, an artist based in Denmark, creates massive wooden trolls from locally sourced recyclable materials. The spectacular structures found around the world will eventually decompose and return to the earth, but not before they are enjoyed by thousands of fans.
Dambo is currently on an extended cross-county road trip through America, called "Way of the Bird King", where he is constructing ten trolls and thousands of birdhouses throughout the country.
One of the ten trolls is being built near Victor, Colorado. The exact whereabouts of the new installation have yet to be revealed, adding an air of mystery to the project.
It will be Dambo's second Colorado troll.
The first is Isak Heartstone, a captivating, 15-foot wooden troll sculpture created for the 2018 Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA).
Isak is on Trollstigen Trail in Breckenridge, a trailhead located in the southeast corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot (189 Boreas Pass Road). Visitors will find the trail by following the troll's footprints.
There is no parking at the trailhead, so guests must walk, bike, or take public transit to the trail. It is a fifteen-minute walk to the troll from the Breckenridge Welcome Center (203 S. Main Street). Go here for more information about the outdoor art exhibit and walking directions.
Isak has been a welcome addition to the Colorado art scene, and soon he will be joined by a new friend - a hidden treasure awaiting discovery.
Follow project updates on the artist's Facebook page.
