(Colorado Springs, CO) Saturday, May 6th, marks the twenty-first anniversary of Free Comic Book Day.
The first Free Comic Book Day coincided with the opening weekend of the 2002 Marvel Spiderman movie. There were four free comics available that year.
More than two decades later, the highly anticipated annual event is still going strong with forty-four free comics in 2023 (selection may vary by location).
Free Comic Book Day is a perfect time to visit a local comic book store and explore new reading material or find old favorites - there is something for everyone!
Below are some special events happening in Colorado Springs on Saturday to celebrate the day.
KaPow Comics and Coffee
KaPow Comics and Coffee will have free comics (up to six per customer) and these specials:
- complimentary brewed coffee
- 50% off back-issue comics
- 25% off toys, books, and graphic novels
Plus, with every $10 purchase on Saturday, customers will have the chance to win an artist-proof, signed DC Bombshells Poison Ivy Statue.
The store opens at 9:00 a.m. and the first 30 customers will get a free goody bag.

Escape Velocity Comics and Graphic Novels
Escape Velocity will have free comics (five per person) all day, and there will be goody bags for the first 50 people in line. The doors open at 11:00 a.m.
The store will also have special guests, including Johnny Golden from Mortal Mirror Studio and Ben Worrell, an artist for Sheath Comics.

Muse Comics and Games
Muse Comics will open one hour early (10:00 a.m.) on Saturday, May 6th. The first 200 people through the door will receive a free goody bag with comics, coupons, and more.
In addition to free comics all day long, the shop will have photo opportunities with local costume artists, including the 501st Legion (Star Wars villains). The store will be open until 7:00 p.m.

East Library
The East Library branch of the Pikes Peak Library District will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day with activities and giveaways for all ages in the Teen Center on Saturday, May 6th. The special event is from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
All of the Pikes Peak Library branches will have free comic books on Saturday while supplies last.
