(Colorado Springs, CO) It has been almost ten years since Dion's arrived in Colorado Springs, the first of its kind in Colorado, and it is one of the most popular pizza places in the city.

Dion's story started long before it arrived in Colorado.

In 1978, Jon Patten and Bill Scott moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to open a Greek restaurant. They purchased the already established New York Pizza with plans to transform it into a gyro and baklava serving venture.

While waiting for equipment to arrive for their Greek eatery, Patten and Scott continued to serve pizza to pay the bills. Their pies were such a success that they altered their business plan and remained a pizzeria. Lucky for us!

According to Dion's, the name of this popular pizza place also has a story. The restaurant was originally going to be Dionysus, named after the Greek God, but the sign was too expensive. To cut costs, Patten and Scott trimmed a few letters, and the new, more affordable name became Dion's.

I grew up on Dion's pizza, and it has a large, loyal following in New Mexico due to the high-quality, made-to-order menu items. The delicious pizza crust and fresh toppings, placed on the cheese instead of under it, make a fantastic savory pie.

Dion's also serves sub sandwiches stacked high on a crispy hoagie roll with a pickle spear, potato chips, and their famous dressing. The house-made Ranch dressing is so good that customers purchase bottles of it.

In addition to pizza and subs, the menu includes original and gourmet salads. It is an eatery that will satisfy all appetites and cravings. Don't forget to end the meal with one of their delicious chocolate chip cookies.

While waiting for your order, you can watch the employees tossing the dough high into the air to form the perfect pie crust. It is dinner and a show at an affordable price.

Dion's is a success story that could have been a Greek tragedy. Two business partners arrived in New Mexico with a plan for a Greek restaurant. After a menu and name change, Dion's was born and has now spread throughout New Mexico and into Texas and Colorado. A welcome import from The Duke City.

I'll see you there!
