Family fun this weekend in Colorado Springs (April 29th - May 1st)

(Colorado Springs, CO) The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the workweek is almost over. It is time to start planning the weekend, and here are a few family-friendly events in Colorado Springs.

The Science of Star Wars

The Space Foundation Discovery Center will host "May the Fourth: The Science of Star Wars" on Saturday, April 30th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This event includes a mini-lightsaber workshop at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. ($5 materials fee), Yoda cookie decorating at noon, a Star Wars-themed Science on a Sphere presentation, and photo opportunities with members of the 501st Legion.

This family-friendly event will be extra fun if you come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character. Museum general admission is required plus an additional $5 materials fee. Learn more here.

  • Admission: $10 for ages 16+, $5 for children ages 4-15, and free for children three and younger. The museum offers senior, military, and student discounts.

Makerspace Open House

The Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) has an excellent Makerspace program that offers tools, materials, and machines for various creative pursuits. They have sewing machines, 3D printers, engravers, and art tools to name a few.

This Friday and Saturday, guests are invited to an open house to learn more about the Makerspace program. All ages can experiment with card making, flower pot painting, laser printing, and more crafts. The materials are provided free of charge.

The open house is an opportunity for children to make Mother's Day gifts or for adults to make something special for themselves.

  • Open House at the East Library on Friday, April 29th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the second floor. The East Library is at 5550 N. Union Blvd in Colorado Springs.
  • Open House at Library 21C on Saturday, April 30th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the CreateSpace. Library 21C is at 1175 Chapel Hills Drive in Colorado Springs.
  • Open House at the Sand Creek Library on Saturday, April 30th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Sand Creek branch is at 1821 S. Academy Blvd in Colorado Springs.

Monster Jam

A bevy of massive trucks is descending on Colorado Springs to compete at the World Arena this weekend. These enormous vehicles do jumps, wheelies, donuts, and other tricks that entertain all ages. Come prepared for loud and dirty fun.

There are four shows (April 29th through May 1st), and tickets can be purchased here.

Garden of the Gods Park

Saturday, April 30th, is "Motorless Morning" at Garden of the Gods Park. From 5:00 a.m. until noon, walkers, runners, bikers, and skaters can explore the park for seven hours without sharing the road with cars.

Saturday is a perfect time for the family to visit the park without the noise and congestion of auto traffic. As always, the park is free.
