COLUMBIA, Mo. — Sophomore guard Shakeel Moore made a layup with 10.5 seconds left as the Mississippi State men’s basketball team beat Missouri 58-56 Sunday night inside Mizzou Arena.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 16-11 (7-7 SEC), while the Tigers fall to 10-17 (4-10 SEC).
Junior guard Iverson Molinar led the Bulldog charge with 16 points, while graduate forward Garrison Brooks added 11 points and seven rebounds. Moore finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.
MSU shot 19-for-51 (37.3%) from the floor, including 3-for-14 (21.4%) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs made 17 free throws compared to seven by Missouri.
The Tigers were led by senior guard Javon Pickett with 16 points, while redshirt junior guard Jarron Coleman scored 15 and junior forward Kobe Brown had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. As a team, Missouri shot 22-for-54 (40.7%), including 5-for-22 (22.7%) on 3-pointers.
Missouri jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game, but MSU managed to tie things up at 9-9 with 13:57 left in the first half. The half saw five more ties before the Bulldogs used an 18-6 run over the final 9:18 of the first half to lead 31-23 at the halftime break.
Missouri opened the second half on a 10-4 run to make it 35-33 in favor of MSU. The Tigers then used an 11-0 run to take a 44-39 lead with 12:28 to play.
The Bulldogs responded by going on a 12-5 run to give them a two-point lead at 51-49. Coleman answered with a layup and then hit a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 54-51 lead with 3:41 left.
Molinar made a layup to make it 56-56 with 37 seconds left. After a missed 3-pointer by Coleman, Moore grabbed the rebound and sprinted to the other end where he was fouled as he made a layup to make it 58-56. He missed the free throw, giving the Tigers a chance to win, but the shot was off the mark.
The Bulldogs will return to action Wednesday when they travel to face the South Carolina Gamecocks at 5:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
