Barbados has been busy. The Caribbean country swore off the royal family and honored Rihanna. What's next?

After officially becoming a republic on Nov. 30, nearly 55 years after the nation severed ties with the British Empire, Barbados set to work.

The Queen may no longer have any authority in the former British Commonwealth, but Rihanna does, having been named to the country's Order of National Heroes by Barbados prime minister Mia Mottley. It's the country's highest national honor, and the singer received it at a swearing-in for the island nation's first president, Sandra Mason. Now, Barbados wants to ring in its new independence by enacting a universal basic income plan for all residents.
