In the very southwest corner of Missouri is the City of Noel, which has been nicknamed The Christmas City and Canoe Capital of the Ozarks. Noel is located along Elk River and rests in McDonald County which borders Northwest Arkansas.

According to World Population Review, Noel has a population of 2,131. Since 1886, Noel's post office has been in operation. Noel is named after brothers, Clark Wallace (C.W.), and William Jasper (W.J.) Noel.

Noel's Christmas postmarks

The tradition Noel performs during the holidays is so uplifting. During the 1930s, the postmaster in Noel came up with the idea of stamping letters and cards in Noel with its special Christmas postmark.

By the 1940s, the tradition of having your mail postmarked became so popular that over 500,000 pieces of mail came to the post office from all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico to get the Christmas postmark. That was during the 1940s and 1950s. Some even have their cards sent off to Europe with the special postmarks.

Every year, the post office in Noel still receives thousands of Christmas cards to get that special postmark stamp. People also travel there. The post office doesn't charge for this service and volunteers come in to affix the holiday postmark on your mail. That takes a lot of time.

The post office asks that you use this service only only for your personal Christmas cards.

If you want the Noel postmarks, package up your Christmas cards that already have the appropriate postage on each card to: Postmaster, 318 Main Street, Noel, MO 64854. For any questions, call the Noel Post Office at 417-475-3810. Your cards will get the special postmark and your postage stamped mail will be on its way.

The small town of Noel is located in the southwest corner of Missouri. Noel bears the nickname "The Christmas City" because of its special holiday postmark. The tradition has grown over the decades, and tens of thousands of people send season's greetings through the town's post office each year.

Since 1932, visitors have come to get the holiday pictorial postmark that says, 'Christmas Greetings from Noel, MO. 'The Christmas City’ in the Ozark Vacation Land.' (Source.)
