There's a historic general store located in New Melle, Missouri in St. Charles County. It's called the Meier General Store and later known as Butler Bros. Grocer Co. which is voluntarily dissolved.

The one-story store was built around 1857 and is a gable front-frame building. The store is on a stone foundation. It's cladded in weatherboard, also known as clapboard consisting of horizontal boards nailed to the outside overlapping each other to keep the rain out.

In 2002, the store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Store history

This general store was established by a prominent local pioneer and German immigrant, William Meier, and has been run by the Meier family for three generations. In the mid-1860s, his son, Ernst, took over until he died in the late 1870s. At that time, Ernst's surviving wife, Catherine, took over and continued operating the store for nearly 20 years. Catherine died in 1934 at the age of 92.

In 1899, Ernst and Catherine's son, Charles, ran the store until the 1940s. The interior of the store is intact. Although Charles had expanded the building, the additions are gone.

Charles died in 1948 and his surviving wife, Anna L. Meier, sold the store a few months after he died. Their store endured over a century of family ownership. Anna died in 1970 at the age of 95. Charles and Anna had two daughters Helena and Frances. Frances died at age 95 in 2003.

The building strongly reflects its original function, and is an important survivor from New Melle's earliest days. (Source.)

The period of significance of this building is from 1857 to 1900. Its historic function was commerce and trade. It is privately owned.

New Melle

New Melle was founded by German immigrants who were from Melle, Germany. Some immigrants opened general stores. A practice of medicine was set up by Dr. Theodor Borberg who also established a grape-growing business and produced wine. There were 48,000 grapevines growing at one point. In 1860, the first public school opened.

New Melle is located 37 miles west of St. Louis. As of the 2020 Census, the population of this small community was 555.
