For those who are not soccer fans

What does FIFA mean? FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or in English, the International Federation of Association Football. FIFA organizes many of the World Cup and Women’s World Cup tournaments. The FIFA players are paid by their clubs and sponsors. Also, since the referees travel around the world and work in more than one country, they are usually multilingual.

Three North American countries will get to collectively host the 2026 FIFA World Cup: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. There will be 48 teams participating in the tournament. There will be 60 matches in the United States, 10 matches in Canada, and 10 matches in Mexico. This will be the first time in World Cup history to have three countries jointly host the tournament.

The 17 USA candidates to be a host city for the FIFA World Cup are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

Kansas City made its bid on October 21, 2021

FIFA representatives and others toured Kansas City today with plans to go to the Power and Light District, Union Station, and of course, the Arrowhead Stadium for a tour. This would be such an exciting opportunity for Kansas City. Their visit also includes attendance at the U.S. Women's Team's soccer game at Children's Mercy Park against Korea. It was a day for Kansas City representatives to show the city's heart and culture.

If Kansas City wins the bid, the Arrowhead Stadium can accommodate the tournament. It would certainly be an economic boom for the city and be very impactful for all the soccer fans as well as local players. Imagine the amount of money to be gained by tourism alone. People will travel to Kansas City just to experience the excitement even if they don't attend any of the matches.

The economic benefits can also put money back into the city. The city would also have to meet the requirements of the FIFA delegation. There are several aspects involved in sustaining a huge event such as this.

The winners will be announced by FIFA early in 2022. Cross your fingers, Kansas City!
