With that being said. I visited Fontano's Subs in Hinsdale, IL.
If you have been reading my reviews for sometime now, you know that I am always on the hunt for a great Italian sub, especially a meatball sub sandwich. I had the best meatball sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. In my last review go check it out.
One of the comments on my last review of Finnucio and Sons was that Fontano's subs made a really killer meatball sandwich.
I, of course, had to go try to see for myself. I took the drive to Hinsdale and arrived around noon.
The location has very limited street parking. I had to park about a block down in a public lot. When I opened the door to the small deli, it was absolutely jam packed with people.
This must really be a popular location for local workers because the majority of the people that were there looked like construction workers. They have a small dining room that was completely filled.
As soon as I walked in one of the extremely friendly gentleman behind the counter asked if he could help me with anything. I told him that this was the first time that I’ve ever been here and knew that I wanted to try a meatball sandwich. I also would like to try something else. He told me that they make their meatballs fresh daily. It is a super popular item on their menu.
He told me that their other most popular sandwich is called the Wiseguy. It is loaded with all Italian meats, oil and mayonnaise, and I also could add giardinera.
I went with a 6 inch meatball sub with hot giardinera. I also tried their specialty sub, the Wiseguy, with hot giardinera.
The line moved relatively quickly. There were about seven people in front of me and before you knew it I was already paying for my sandwiches and they were already made. The two 6 inch subs came to $20 with a drink.
There was no room to eat it in the establishment, so I had to go to my car. This was a major mistake that I will learn later.
When I opened up both sandwiches, they were extremely sloppy to eat. The oil was dripping off of the Italian sub, and the meatball was slathered in red sauce.
I tried my best not to make a complete mess of myself. I took a bite of the meatball sub first, and it had a good flavor. It was definitely in the top 10 meatballs that I’ve had out at delis or restaurants. It did not hold a candle to Finnucio and Sons in Schaumburg.
The Wiseguy sandwich was absolutely delicious and top-tier Italian sub. All of the Italian meats were extremely fresh. The bread was fantastic. It really held up being saturated by all the oil.
I really do like this place and if I lived anywhere near the area, I would be here probably on a weekly basis.
They also sell extremely small, serving sizes of potato salads, macaroni, salad, and coleslaw. I did not try any of that. Maybe next time when I return. I will definently be back.
The food was top-tier, but the parking was kind of a nuisance. The service was absolutely fantastic. I think I was charged though, for an 8 inch sub instead of a six inch sub. It’s not that big of a deal.
I gave an overall rating of 8 out of 10. This is definitely a great authentic Italian deli that you should check out for yourself.
