Mccormick and Schmick's Seafood and Steaks - Oak Brook, IL Restaurant Review

Chicago Food King

I am always on the hunt for good fish restaurants and thought I would check out Mccormick and Schmick's Seafood and Steaks.

My wife and I needed somewhere to eat at around 6 pm on a Saturday. Everywhere was booked with reservations. I went on the OpenTable app to see what was available for that time. McCormick and Schmick’s had no wait time, so we decided to try it out.

I walked in and noticed the place was pretty dead for any day, not just a Saturday. I was greeted warmly by the host at the front desk and I asked to be seated outside. One other table was also seated outside on their pretty awesome patio area. I was in shock why the place was so empty.

Our waiter swiftly greeted us. He was very friendly and we put in our drink order and appetizers. We decided to both have a bowl of clam chowder and an order of deep-fried scallops.

When our deep-fried scallops arrived at our table, I took my first bite and it was not appetizing at all. They were greasy, flavorless, and the portion was only four tiny breaded scallops on a bed of wilted shredded lettuce.

The bowls of clam chowder arrived next. It was very thick and tasted good, but not great. It had a brownish color to it, which I think was possibly from the bacon fat.

I ordered fish and chips for my main course and my wife ordered the crab-stuffed salmon. At first glance, the dishes were picture-perfect looking. Upon tasting them, it was awful. My fish was in a flavorless and over-salted batter. The fish was mushy like it came from a frozen bag of fish. My fries had a weird red paprika coating, over-salted, and tasted old.

My wife’s dish tasted like pure salt and like a TV dinner. It was not good at all. I soon started to see why this place had such a low star rating on Yelp.

It definitely was not because of the service or the restaurant, but rather the quality of the food. Furthermore, the portions were small and overpriced. The food was over-salted and tasted old. The waiter told us that they got their salmon at the beginning of the week. I’m sure it was frozen and thawed, not fresh.

One positive thing about this restaurant is they had a great outdoor patio. This is the perfect place to dine outside with friends or family on a nice summer day. The service was very good and the staff was very attentive.

I give this restaurant a rating of 3 out of 10. I do not recommend dining at this restaurant.
