Bavette’s Restaurant - Chicago, IL Restaurant Review

Chicago Food King

Bavette’s Restaurant was always a place that I wanted to try, but it was always very difficult to get a reservation for a weekend. It definitely is a good idea to book your reservation weeks in advance because times fill up extremely quickly.

Upon entering, it looks like a small French bistro with lots of wood, beautiful crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, artwork, and other tapestries that hang from the walls.

We got a perfect seat with a comfortable booth. The only complaint that I could say was this was during the worst heat wave Chicago has ever seen and the air could have been a little better in the restaurant. It was a little stagnant.

Service here is impeccable. Staff is constantly watching your water glass to make sure you always have it filled up. They bring out quite possibly the best sourdough bread I have ever tasted. It was warm and yeasty and came with the most delicious butter.

For drinks, I went with an old-fashioned and my wife had the Bavette’s Punch. Both were extremely good and I felt the price was worth the pour.

For our appetizer, we ordered two salads. I ordered the avocado crab and my wife ordered the salmon Caesar salad. Both were absolutely amazing! We also ordered the duck terrine and I am still dreaming about this dish. It came with an orange marmalade jam and, of course, more of that awesome sourdough bread to spread it on.

We then ordered our main dishes. I went for the 45 day dry aged ribeye with roasted garlic on top at a temperature of medium plus. My wife ordered a fillet at a temperature of medium plus. The steaks were the best I've ever had. Our sides that we ordered were equally phenomenal. We ordered the Elote style corn, buttery mashed potatoes with chicken jus, and the truffle mac and cheese. Everything, again, was unbelievable! At this point, I felt like I was going to fall into a food coma from all the food. It was my wife's birthday and they brought her out a piece of mousse cake with a sparkler on top. It was such a nice way to end the evening!

the hype! It is some of the best food I've ever had in my life. The only reason why I did not give this a 10 out of 10 was for a very petty reason. The restaurant charged us for the birthday slice of cake. The bill was over $400 (with tip) for two people. I feel that it is just in bad taste not to give a free dessert for a special occasion. Also, out of convenience, I wish there was a way they could offer valet. We had to walk about half a block to the restaurant from the parking garage. It was raining out with 100° heat and not very comfortable. They also stated that they validate parking, but we still ended up paying thirteen dollars.

I will say the restaurant is fancy, but not pretentious. The atmosphere feels like you are a friend’s home with a very welcoming feel. While eating, I did not have that feeling of being rushed. The staff gives the impression that they want you to stick around for a while and enjoy the atmosphere.

I will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes. I give Bavette’s Restaurant a rating of 9 out of 10.
