The twelve days began on December 26

According to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia for the early settlers began on December 26 and lasted until Epiphany on January 6. This was a time of the holy and the profane with reflection on the birth of Christ for some while others made merry and displayed bad behavior.

A book about Virginia and the Twelve Christmas Days

The Twelve Days of Christmas in Virginia is also a 2009 children's book by Sue Corbett sold on the website Marissa's Books & Gifts and on Amazon. The story is about a boy named William who visits his cousin Madison who lives in the Old Dominion during the holidays.

Madison shows his relatives all around the state and William writes home each day of the twelve days of the holiday sending gifts to his sister, Eleanor. Since she can't join them he sends items like 4 cannon blasts, 3 tall ships, and 2 guiding lights. Each item correlates to the things mentioned in the song The 12 Days of Christmas- 4 calling birds, 3 French hens, 2 turtle doves etc.
