Northwest Roanoke will have a new grocery store
Goodwill Industries is partnering with MDI (Merchants Distributors Inc.) a company that helps small grocery stores to survive in the midst of the big chain stores. In Roanoke, these are Walmart, Kroger, and Food Lion. This partnership will bring the first-of-its-kind grocery store to the Roanoke Valley.
The Goodwill Grocery Store will be located in the building on Melrose Avenue and 24th Street NW that houses it's corporate offices as well as the Melrose Branch Library. For decades there was a Kroger on 19th Street NW and when it closed a wholesale grocer opened in the Goodwill building after Kmart relocated.
Later Save A Lot opened in the former Roanoke Salem Plaza but did not last long. There is currently a Food Giant on 24th Street across from Goodwill Industries. Northwest Roanoke is considered a food desert because residents do not have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The Goodwill Grocery store is expected to open on December 1, 2024, and to provide at least 50 jobs.
