Parkdale Mills in Hillsville, a prominent manufacturer in Southwest Virginia will be closing its doors for good on October 9 leaving over 300 hundred workers without jobs. Thanks to The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act in Virginia these employees were given an advance notice.
WARN requires all employers with 100 or more employees to give workers a 60 calendar-day advance notice of a planned closing and mass layoffs. This prevents abrupt shutdowns where employees find out when they show up to work and there is a note on the door.
Fatz Cafe in Dublin recently announced they were closing with a note on the door but it's not clear if this was for customers or workers as well. The Parkisdale Mills warn notice from the Virginia Employment Commission indicates employees were notified on August 10, about the upcoming closure.
