DMV is advising Virginians who travel by air that in 2 years they will be required to have a new form of identification. By May 7. 2025 a REAL ID will be necessary in order to enter federal buildings, military bases, and also for domestic travel. The new form of identification is optional but anyone traveling on a domestic flight or going to a military base must have one or they will be denied. DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackeymade the following statement.

Many Virginians rely on their state-issued credentials for air travel,” The new state identification will have a star in the top right corner indicated in the image on the right.“If you still need to upgrade to a REAL ID, prepare for your visit now by applying online and gathering the necessary documents. Details about REAL ID

Virginians are being encouraged to apply for a REAL ID as soon as possible to avoid traffic and long lines at the DMV as 2025 nears. Those under the age of 18 will not be required to obtain this new form of identification. You can go this link for additional information.

The REAL ID Act, was passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.
