Senior alert issued for Fairfax man
WDBJ 7 is reporting that the Virginia State Police has issued a Senior Alert on behalf of Fairfax County Police as part of the search for a missing man.
Police are looking for Umaru Barrie, a 75-year-old African American male who is 5′ 5″ and 160 pounds with brown eyes and grey hair. Barrie suffers from a cognitive impairment that police say makes his disappearance pose a “credible threat to his health and safety.”
In 2020 a senior alert was issued for two African American adults in Fairfax a male and a female who were missing and had cognitive issues but both were later found safe. Statistics given last October from Columbia University indicate that 1 out of 10 Americans age 65 and older have dementia and another 22% have mild cognitive impairment.
Dementia patients tend to be older, have lower levels of education, and also are more likely to be Black or Hispanic. Men and women were shown to have similar rates of mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
Anyone who has seen Umaru Barrie or has credible information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Fairfax County Police at 703/691-2131. Reports say Barrie was last seen on May 22, 2023, at 5:53 p.m. at Reston Hospital, 1850 Town Center Parkway in Reston Virginia. Police believe Barrie may have been on foot and might have been wearing brown pants and a grey or brown sweater.
