Prince Edward Duke of York

During the 1960s several local churches took their congregations to Prince Edward Lake every year for picnics. The locale is now known as Prince Edward Lake and Gooden State Park and Prince Edward County is named for British royalty. There are at least three royals who have shared the name.

Prince Edward County was formed in the Virginia Colony in 1754 from Amelia County. It was named for Prince Edward, Duke of York March 25, 1739 – September 17, 1767)

He was the second son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and the younger brother of George III of the United Kingdom. The original county seat housed the courthouse and was called Prince Edward Courthouse but was later renamed the village of Worsham.

There was also Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent 9 November 2, 1767- (January 23, 1820)the fourth son of King George III who was the father of Queen Victoria. The royal currently bearing the name is Prince Edward the former Earl of Wessex and the 4th and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. Edward has been given the title of his father the late Prince Phillip and is the new Duke of Edinburgh. His wife Sofie Rhys Jone is now the Duchess of Edinburgh.

The current Prince Edward and his wife met in 1994 and were married on June 19, 1999. They have two children, a daughter. Lady Louise Windsor was born on November 8, 2003, and a son James was born on December 17, 2007. who inherited his father's former title of the Earl of Wessex. Tongues have been wagging because Lady Louise was not automatically given a title as her brother was.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburg are low-key, do their work in private, and are rarely in the news. While Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson, Queen Consort Camilla, and Duchess Megan Markle have all been hounded by the press Sophie has not. Prince Edward also escaped scandal and tabloid stories unlike King Charles II, and Prince Andrew.

RAM House offers a challenge to the Roanoke Valley to help the homeless

Roanoke Area Ministries also known as the RAM House is offering a challenge to the Roanoke Valley to assist them in offering help to the most vulnerable in the area. RAM is in need of a new building due to an increase in homelessness in the area and the current building at 824 Campbell Ave SW is no longer able to fill the growing needs of the agency. RAM serves breakfast to the homeless and lunch to anyone who is in need and they are open 365 days each year. They feed an average of 200 people a day just for lunch and have helped about 2,000 individuals with over $300,000 in financial assistance that prevents them from being homeless.

Roanoke's roaming bear has been to school and now to church

They say truth is stranger than fiction and indeed it is. Last week on May 24, a bear was reported at Round Hill School off Oakland Blvd. and Greehurst NW and the school went on lockdown. The animal began moving south and was later filmed in the backyard of a man on 10th Street NW near the bridge. The bear decided to go to school that day and today he chose to go to church. Earlier around noon the bear had moved further west and was spotted at Central Baptist Church at 1502 Staunton Ave NW Roanoke. I was told someone placed a video on Facebook but have not seen it myself.

Roanoke College will reinstate a football team, marching band and cheerleaders after an 81 year hiatus

The local community assists Roanoke College in raising funds. When a community coines together dreams can come true as with Roanoke College. The Salem school has met a financial goal of 1.3 million that will lead to the reinstatement of a varsity football team, marching band, and cheerleaders. The school has not had a team since 1942 due to the constraints of World War II. Now 81 years later the sport is making a comeback.

New details emerge about Virginia man Rashid Ali Bynum and Congresswoman Eunice Dumfour

Rashid Ali Bynum from Virginia is accused of driving to New Jersey, and shooting Republican councilwoman Eunice Dumfour multiple times in the parking lot outside her condo. The public is wondering who Bynum is and what was his connection to the New Jersey Councilwoman. The suspect was traced back to Virginia and is facing extradition to New Jersey at the end of June. The state of Virginia has been making history since its inception when it became the first US colony to be established. Now additional history is being made with the opening of a LEGO manufacturing company in Chesterfield County. New LEGO plant promises jobs and a boon to Virginia economy

According to WRIC the LEGO Group’s first-ever United States manufacturing facility is officially in the beginning stages after the toy company held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday. The event took place at the 340-acre site located within Chester’s Meadowville Technology Park where LEGO is going to be located. Governor Glen Younkin says around 500 new jobs will eventually be available once the plant opens in Chesterfield County in 2025.

The Gatlin Brothers, Larry, Steve, and Rudy have been performing for 60 years since they were children at the ages of 2, 4, and 6. Virginia Zoo in Norfolk emphasizes environmental issues on National Flip-Flop Day

Be environmentally conscious on National Flip-Flop Day. National Flip Flop-Day is May 31 a day to celebrate the comfortable summer slide-on sandals. The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk used the 2017 observance on June 17 to bring awareness to how flip flops are a danger to the environment and marine life. In 2023 the date was changed to coincide with Memorial Day and the beginning of summer and Virginians can celebrate keeping in mind the 2017 decision by making sure they dispose of the sandals properly. Millions of flip-flops have washed up on Australian beaches contributing to plastic pollution.

Several local Greenways were affected by heavy rains and may be closed temporarily

The lower Wiley Avenue Bridge is covered by flood water after recent rains which has led to part of the Roanoke River Greenway being closed. Memorial Day flooding is the reason the bridge is underwater and Roanoke City officials say the trail will be closed until further notice. Wiley Ave is not the only Greenway that has been affected by the heavy rain. City employees will also be working on the Lick Run Greenway near 10th Street NW, the Tinker Creek Greenway near Dale Avenue and Kenwood Boulevard NE, and The Roanoke River Greenway along Bennington Street SW and under 9th Street.

There have been hundreds of movies, documentaries, TV shows, and television miniseries related to the US Civil War over the years and the most popular continue's to be 1939's Gone With The Wind. Before this blockbuster hit theaters there was a film short titled The Blue and the Gray in 1935 which was filmed in many locations including Virginia. There is a 1982 television miniseries of the same name.

Virginia fans are excited that Tim Allen will reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5

Toy Story was an instant hit in Virginia in 1995 and local stores were filled with toys based on the film. My mother gave my youngest son every one of the characters for Christmas and I loved the green space alien who said " You have been chosen" when squeezed. The franchise was still going strong when my first grandchild was born and I was so proud to give him a Buzz Lightyear for his second birthday in 2007. Tim Allen has just confirmed that a Toy Story 5 is in the works and Virginia fans like those across the nation are happy to hear that Allen will reprise his role as Buzz.

Does your Virginia location use the nickname for winding curves in the road?

10 WAVY NEWS (WRIC) reported today that a pickup truck was rescued from a cliff on Skyline Drive in Luray, Virginia after the speeding driver went over the stone wall on the side of the road. There was no mention of the driver's name or how fast he was going but the speed limit on that area of Skyline Drive is 35 mph. Although there was no curve in the road in the picture of the rescue there are curves nearby and the accident brought to mind the phrase Dead Man's Curve.

Virginia's top names for dogs in 2023

Once upon a time in Virginia, the names you heard most often for canines were Rover, Fido, and Spot but there have always been variations and there is a listing of 500 old-school names for dogs. My childhood pups were Peanut, Tico, and Frisky while my cousins had a dog named Taco. Other pets in the neighborhood were called Frisky Miss, Bozo, Tag, Rusty, Bullet, Queenie, and King. My husband had German Shepherds he named Angel and Frisco and my grandchildren's first dog was named Max while their current puppy is called Ziggy.

Virginia Pink Energy customers among those who need answers about their solar panels

Virginia solar panel customers have been left in limbo. Customers of Pink Energy, (formerly known as PowerHome Solar) have been waiting for more than 6 months for a resolution to their dilemma. The company abruptly shut down in September of 2022, and the office of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares told 8News it was investigating the business after receiving 54 complaints. Pink Energy filed for bankruptcy in October of 2022 and the decision left dozens of customers in states including Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina with unfinished projects and loan payments due for work that was never completed.

Celebrating 50 years of The Defranco Family

Five decades ago The Defranco Familycame on the scene with a hit record A Heart Beat is a Love Beat in 1973. I recall the single being played on local radio station WROV and climbing the charts on Kasey Kasem's Top 40 Count Down on WFIR. The group consisted of guitarist Benny DeFranco (born 11 July 1953); keyboardist Marisa DeFranco (born 23 July 1954); guitarist Nino DeFranco (born 19 October 1955); drummer Merlina DeFranco (born 20 July 1957); and lead singer Tony DeFranco (born 31 August 1959). Six Virginia Newspapers will now publish only 3 days of the week

Media mogul Ted Turner predicted in the mid-2000s that print newspapers would be out of business in a decade. Turner was mostly dismissed at the time but he was obviously on to something. While daily print news is still around there have been some drastic changes. In Virginia, six popular newspapers are cutting back from 7 days a week to 3 and it's causing alarm. Cardinal News is reporting that beginning June 27 the following changes will take place.

When my grandmother died in 2010 at age 92 she weighed over 200lbs and never had problems with fractures. Her sister who passed away 3 years later at 93 had lost weight over the years, shrunk a few inches in height, had a shoulder that came out of the socket a few times, and also experienced several falls. My great aunt by definition would have been considered frail. New studies are indicating that frailty may possibly be prevented based on diet.
