Coffee has health benefits

Coffee is big business and the Folgers company is celebrating four decades of their popular television ad for their product. Your morning ( afternoon, evening, or nite time) cup of Joe is also said to have amazing health benefits. Drinking a cup of java is said to mprove alertness and overall mood, reduce the risk of heart disease and type two diabetes. Coffee is also said to be beneficial for decreasing the risk of some cancers including colon, uterine, and liver".

The Harvard Medical School, says coffee can also reduce the risk of Alzheimer's Parkinson's, and cirrhosis. In November 2015 in Circulation revealed that coffee consumption was associated with an 8% to 15% decrease in the risk of death and if you live in Tazewell Virginia you now have a new cafe that offers coffee and much more.

Dragon's Coffee and More comes to Tazewell

10 On Your Side is reporting that Dragon's Coffee and more is a unique new experience created by Ron and Jen Spain and located in a building that used to be a gas station on Carline Ave. in Tazewell County Virginia. In addition to coffee, the shop sells homemade jewelry and other items.

“We make all of our syrups from scratch with real ingredients. Our vanilla bean, I use vanilla bean, it’s not a vanilla extract. We make it all here in-house and our coffee comes from Seattle, it’s the coffee capital,”

The Dragon's Coffee and More Facebook page has a listing of the items they sell as well as the prices and tells the love story of how Ron a local guy from Bland met Jen, from Spokane Washington in 2007 married her and now they have 5 sons and 2 daughters.

For 3 years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2.2 million Medicaid recipients in Virginia were automatically recertified without having to prove eligibility but now that's about to change. Just like the extra food stamp distribution during the COVID crisis Government-sponsored health care is no longer being provided as a courtesy. This will be a daunting task to begin checking eligibility and some people may show up at a hospital or doctor's office only to find they are no longer covered.

Virginia Apples are a hidden treasure right in our own backyards

When I was attending Lord Betetourt High School in Daleville, some children got on our bus just as we passed the entrance to Ikenberry Orchards. We were told their families came to the area to pick apples and then returned to Florida. In my neck of the woods, we also picked our own apples and pears which were plentiful on trees throughout the area.

Move Over law expansion will save lives in Virginia

A new law should decrease roadside accidents and deaths. One of the saddest things to hear about is someone who survived an accident or stopped to assist a motorist in destress and was hit and or killed while they were standing on the side of the road. In Virginia, AAA says 28 people have died on roadsides when they were hit while outside of a disabled vehicle because someone did not slow down and move over. It's not always possible to get into the other lane but everyone can slow down when they see other vehicles on the side of the road.

Meet the rare Bog turtles and Satyr butterfly that may shut down FloydFest 2023

The new FloydFest venue at 5826 Floyd Highway North, Check, VA may not be suitable and the annual event might be canceled until 2024. Some fans have complained that the 5-day concert should have remained at its original location in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Floyd. This weekend there will be a community Easter Eggstravaganza taking place in Lynchburg Virginia and this brings to mind one of my favorite Spring/Easter movie scenes from the original Steel Magnolia starring Julia Roberts, Darryl Hannah, and Virginia native Shirley McClaine. FloydFest forever home and 2023 festival may be in jeopardy

FloydFest is a 5-day celebration of music & art that began in 2002 and has taken place in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains Floyd in Southwest Virginia for 20 years. The event is a local favorite and well attended each year until now. The website has a message that basically says that due to circumstances ( final permitting and logistical factors beyond their control) "see you in 2024" which is upsetting concertgoers who were looking to attend the 2023 festival.

The Greyhound Bus Station was once a staple in the Roanoke Valley for those who di not have transportation. people living in all areas of Botetourt County as well as Montvale and Bedford County used this mode of transportation to go to and fro from Roanoke to Lynchburg and beyond. Virginia black walnuts have a rich history

I was a little girl during the 1960s my grandmother would take the neighborhood children to collect walnuts from trees in a specific location in Blue Ridge Virginia. Black walnut trees were located in a wooded area less than a mile from route 460 East, near the end of Blue Ridge Springs Road close to the railroad, the sulfur spring, and the mountain. We filled up several bags from the nuts that and fallen to the ground and when we got home the fun began. We would remove the green casing to get the walnut shell and our hands would be darkened from touching those that were not fully ripe.

The tradition of the sun dancing or shouting at sunrise on Easter

Why does the sun appear to dance on Easter morning?. It is customary for local churches in Roanoke and Botetourt County as well as those around the world to hold Easter Sunrise services to acknowledge the women the Bible says found Christ's tomb empty at sunrise. The tradition is for various churches to come together under one roof and prior to COVID, the host church would have breakfast. When I was a child local churches gathered in Glade Creek Baptist Church Cemetary and went back to the host church that year for breakfast but I never heard anything about the Easter morning sun dancing until about 5 years ago.

Have you seen Jean Miller who is missing from Radford?

There have been several missing teens in the Roanoke Valley and the surrounding area since January, First, there was autistic teen Elijah Campbell who was later found safe, and next Allaynah Myers. who went missing in 2019 but was later found safe. There have been no updates on Myers recent disappearance so the public does not know if she as found or if authorities are still looking. Now police are asking for the public's help in locating a missing adult Jean Miller who has not been seen in almost a week.

The Chincoteague Pony an Assateague wild pony now represents the State of Virginia

Virginia has some fascinating new mascots of sorts. Chincoteague is a town on the island that bears the same name, located in Virginia’s Eastern Shore region and a gateway to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, on Assateague Island, where wild Chincoteague ponies roam. The origin is not certain as the native population of North American horses died off during the ice ages of the Pleistocene era. There are several theories, however of how these horses arrived on the islands.

Native species of Wild Bull Elk are returning to Virginia from the brink of extinction

The Wild Bull Elk once roamed the hillsides in Virginia. Deer, Elk, Moose, Antelope', and Reindeer all come from the Cervidae family so the next time you hear the song Home on the Range consider that there was more than one type of this breed playing along with the buffalo. " Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play". Although they are from the same family the Wild Bull Elk is much larger than deer and now has been brought back to Virginia from the brink of extinction.

Beitzah a roasted hard boiled egg is an important part of the Passover meal

There are two traditions that take place during the Spring and sometimes they overlap. Ressurection Sunday observes the day believers in Jesus say He rose from the dead. It is on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox so the date fluctuates. Passover is based on the Jewish calendar and falls on the 15th of Nissan and can come before during or just after Easter. There are ways to keep sweat bees at bay this spring and summer

There are 13 types of insects from the bee family in Virginia-most notably bumble bees, honey bees, and carpenter bees. There is also the sweat bee which was quite a nuisance when I was a young girl. They seemed to chase us children and would get inside of our clothes during the summer. We would be running, screaming, and pulling at our attire in an effort to be free of the pests.
