The Powderpuff fundraiser will benefit local youth
Support is needed for local children's sports in order for them to continue to provide the activities that benefit the community..The Powderpuff fundraiser will take place on Saturday, August 20 and the funds raised will benefit two Roanoke Rec Clubs. This is the ideal opportunity to lend a hand to keep local youth sports in the area properly funded.
In the United States and Canada, powderpuff football games are flag or touch football games between girls from junior and senior classes or cross-town school rivals. Funds from the ticket and concession sales during the game usually go to charity, for a dance or to the senior class.
Brittnay Morgans' article for WDBJ News 7 reveals that the Southeast and GSA (Greater Southwest) rec clubs will be hosting a powderpuff football game at Belmont Park which is located at 923 Montrose Ave. SE. There will be a role reversal as a flag football game with the cheerleading teams from each club will take place as the football teams will act as cheerleaders for the event.
Money is needed for expenses
The organizers told News 7 that these types of events assist in offsetting the cost of equipment, uniforms, and insurance that ensures athletes are "safe to play and learn new skills".Miciayla Wilburn who is associated with the Southeast Rec Club said the following:
“A lot of our kids here in Southeast don’t have the capability of getting to those practices when it comes to those travel teams,” “They don’t have the funds to pay those high prices to be on those teams. A lot of those teams have tryouts and just because you don’t have the specific skillset they’re looking for doesn’t mean you can’t progress and get there and that’s what we offer at the rec level.”
Admission is free and the kickoff for the game is at 2 p.m. so please consider supporting this first-ever Powderpuff fundraiser worthwhile effort.
