Popular actress Mary Alice has passed away

Actress Mary Alice (Smith) has passed away according to The Daily Mail. She had numerous roles in film and television but was known for her roles as Leticia "Lettie" Bostic on the NBC sitcom A Different World (1987–1989). Her character was the dorm director from midway through season one until the end of season 2. She also portrayed Effie Williams in the 1976 film Sparkle and Ellie Grant Hubbard in 1980 on the ABC soap All My Children.

Alice also performed on stage and received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her appearance in the 1987 production of Fences. Wikipedia says the actress was born December 3,1941 in, Indianola Mississippi, Alice was the daughter of Ozelar Jurnakin Smith and Sam Smith. She began acting in her hometown at an early age but her family moved from Mississippi to Chicago when she was two years old. Based on Wikipedia the actress would be 91 but other sources indicate her birth date as 1945 or 1947 making her 75 or 77..

During the 1970s the actress was on the television series Good Times, Sanford and Son, and Police Woman. She appeared in many other TV shows including LA Law, Kojak, Cosby, and Women of Brewster Place. Fans may also recall that Alice portrayed the mysterious Oracle in The Matrix Revolutions. She was also in many films including Down in the Delta, Malcolm X, Sparkle, and The Vernon Johns Story.

Mary Alice won an Emmy in 1993 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for I’ll Fly Away and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of fame in 2000 There is no record of the actress marrying or having children and her cause of death and survivors have not yet been announced.
