Lego Movie World opened last week at Legoland California, and everything was as awesome as expected.
Taking over the former Heartlake City spot on the west side of the park, the highly-anticipated new land is Legoland California's largest ever addition to the park. The dazzlingly-colorful space took two years to build and puts visitors in the “The Lego Movie” and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” with thrilling rides like Emmet's Flying Adventure and Unikitty’s Disco Drop. You can eat at Cloud Cuckoo Crepes and visit Emmet's Super Suite and Benny's Play Ship!
LEGO Movie World Rides and Attractions
A water play space takes center stage amidst six new attractions, with the fun playship structure and tons of giant LEGO figurines adjacent. There are several benches for relaxing, perfect for parents who want a light, cooling mid-day mist while keeping an eye on their kids. Depending on your preferences, it may be a better option than getting drenched by a kid with a squirt gun over on Splash Battle in Pirate Shores.
Benny's Play Ship is a giant spaceship playground where kids can run their energy out to their heart's content, clambering to the top and zooming down speedy slides over and over. There are also some really fun hands-on structures for climbing, manipulating, and eyeballing their gears to figure out how they work.
Unikitty's Disco Drop launches guests up to Cloud Cuckoo Land and then sends them on a dropping, spinning, riveting ride back down to the tune of Unikitty's widely-varying emotional antics. The former carousel has been retooled into Queen Watevra's Carousel, complete with 60 of her brightly-colored horses.
Emmet's Super Suite gives visitors the chance to walk into the plasticy LEGO living space of Emmet, straight down to the cutest details. Characters are known to make occasional appearances here, and there are fun spots to nab a photo to help you capture those childhood wonder moments forever.
In Emmet's Flying Adventure Ride, guests hop aboard Emmet’s triple-decker flying couch and soar - feet dangling - amidst an immersive full dome virtual screen wonderland of familiar film destinations including Middle Zealand, Cloud Cuckoo Land, Pirates Cove and the Sistar System. Guests will appreciate the entertaining LEGO brick hands-on spaces woven into the land to help make the wait more entertaining, and there are tons of fun art posters with quirky sayings.
Don't miss the Build Watevra You Wa'Na Build space, where aspiring Master Model Builders can create anything they imagine out of LEGO bricks. Sandwiched between the carousel and the shop in a quiet corner, this is a great way to help kids calm down and rest a bit after the stimulation of the big rides.
Design and Backdrops
From the energy-charged entrance to the larger-than-life billboards, awesome photo opps abound! Pack your camera and leave some time for exploring, because every square inch of this place is AWESOME.
Emmet's Flying Adventure Ride is fully encased in this gigantic feline LEGO creation that makes for the best-ever Instagram pic. Tucked behind this space is a thoughtfully-designed open-air seating area with umbrellas and tables so you can lounge a bit, eat ramen, whatever you'd like. The open-air courtyard feel here in particular leads to imaginative exploration, supporting LEGO's own mission to "inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow."
Right across the way, this "Honey, where are my pants?" billboard is conveniently place right above the restrooms and it's - well - absolute perfection.
Everything is Ramen
A welcome respite from the all-fried fare that's on the docket at many theme parks, Everything is Ramen offers up fresh fare to fit absolutely any diet. Here you'll find everything from pre-packaged paleo snack favorites and allergy-sensitive goodies to rice bowls, salads, slow-roasted pork belly, tofu and bone broth.
Cloud Cuckoo Crepes
Of course, if you have a sweet tooth to satiate, Cloud Cuckoo Crepes is the spot for you. They make decadent crepes right in front of your eyes, then slather them with glorious goodies such as Nutella, whipped cream, bananas, berries, chocolate and more. They also serve up a killer espresso, or you can hop right across the way to Benny's Rocket Fuel for frozen lemonade, slushies, and snacks like ice cream and popcorn.
The Awesome Shop
The aptly-named retail destination near the entrance to LEGO Movie World features exclusive character figures, accessories, blankets, and other merch featuring popular movie characters and themes. The Big Shop towards the entrance of the park will always be the ultimate shopping experience with the biggest selection of LEGO toy sets under one roof, and essential travel items to help with the journey. That said, the smaller selection at The Awesome Shop has a cute, quirky, fun vibe that makes it an absolute must-see.
Pro Legoland Tips
The park is currently on a reservation basis, so make sure to book tickets online and score your spot before you go. If you stay at either of the LEGO hotels on-property, you'll get extra hours in the morning along with an amazing free buffet breakfast. Vacation packages are available to help you enjoy the whole experience.
Minifigure Trading is currently on hiatus, but check if it's running again before you go. While at Legoland, definitely save time for the separately-ticketed Sea Life and the Water Park, too! To maximize your visit, start at Lego Movie World (specifically, Emmet’s Flying Adventure) at opening, then head straight to the back of the park and work your way forward to avoid crowds.
Make sure to check height requirements, as things with higher limits are more thrilling / better for older kids. Ride swapping is also an option with little kids! LEGOLAND is great about special needs (chat with guest services) and there’s a paid Reserve-N-Ride option if you really want to skip the lines. Granny's Apple Fries are a long-time favorite snack of parkgoers here, and many families like to stock up at the Minifigure Market because it’s significantly cheaper than buying online.
Get ready to have an AWESOME time!
