My first time at Will Rogers State Beach was a pleasant surprise

I had been avoiding Will Rogers State Beach on the border of Santa Monica and Malibu because I assumed it would always be really packed and somewhat touristy. Every time I had driven by the parking lot, cars were lined up the street waiting to get in. It always looked like a madhouse. I went recently and figured out the trick - get there early! I went around 10:30am and it wasn't crowded yet. You can drive all the way to the North end of the parking lot and park there, and then set up your stuff at the north end of the beach right south of the private club there.

The beach isn't too wide so it doesn't feel like you're one of many on the beach - it's smaller than the Santa Monica and Venice beaches which I liked. There were mostly families and kids nearby, and it felt like people were more local than out-of-towners. As I was leaving I saw how crowded it had gotten around 2pm, so I'm glad I went as early as I did!
