My favorite Santa Monica Mountains hike is in Temescal Canyon Park

Temescal Canyon is a park very close to the Pacific Palisades and Malibu. There's picnic tables, old campsites, and some great hiking trails. I always park on Sunset Ave outside the park to avoid parking fees in the parking lot. There's one parking lot right when you enter off Sunset, and another closer to the trails if you want to save your walking for the hike itself. There are two entry points to the loop. One is straight up and more of a workout initially, and the other end brings you up through the canyon to a dried up waterfall and bridge. You can start at either end and still do the loop, or just walk as far in as you'd like and turn around. The whole loop takes about two hours.

There are great views from the top of the hike, where you can see the nice houses of the Palisades, and the whole coastline on clear days. The trail is fairly narrow, so for those who prefer wide paths, this isn't for you. It's a great workout and not too far from West LA!
