The wealthiest person in Virginia is a woman

The richest woman in Virginia comes from a household name you've seen on the shelves of your favorites stores. That's right, she's an heiress to the Mars, Inc. candy fortune.

Jacqueline Mars is estimated to be worth 31.1 billion dollars according to Patch, and is akin to the Mars family who owns Mars, Incorporated.

The multi-billion-dollar candy company is a famous manufacturer of candies like the maker of Snickers, Mars Bars, Milky Way, Twix, and M&M's. And over a century the Mars family fortune has amassed a value of 94 billion dollars. The company was founded by Jacquelin Mars' grandfather, Frank C. Mars who learned how to dip chocolate by hand from his mother. Mars, Inc. is now a manufacturer of not just candy but pet products, various foods, and more. The company's Our History section of the website reads in part, "For more than five generations, Mars has evolved to create products and services that people (and their pets) love."

Jacqueline Mars is reported to be 82 years old and now divorced with three children. Her profile on Forbes indicates that she received her Bachelor of Arts/Science, at Bryn Mawr College. Mars is considered to be "notoriously private" and information about her personal dealings is hard to locate.

The Mars, Inc. heiress resides in The Plains, Virginia. The Plains is an area situated near the Potomac River between southern Maryland and northern Virginia. Her son, Stephen Mars is on the company's board of directors and she worked for the company for 20 years. She owns one-third of Mars, Inc. and her brother also owns one-third.
