Later this week, Wheeler will dedicate its new Veterans Memorial. According to Village President Ben Stephens, the memorial has been in the works for the last three years and is the result of some collective hard work. Stephens said, "We are very thankful for everyone that helped us, including a good amount of businesses." The 50 Yard Line Bar and Grill arranged a lot of the fundraising efforts.
"We are very proud of [the memorial] and will keep doing anything we can do to keep building our town," added Stephens.
Wheeler already has a smaller veterans memorial off of Highway 170, near the post office. But according to Stephens, the village "wanted something bigger and nicer, out of respect." The new memorial is in a more prominent location, off of Highway 25 next to the Wheeler ballpark. Anyone who drives into the village at night can't miss it, as it is well lit. The memorial also has several benches for anyone who wants to sit and pay their respects.
