A close look at Colorado's covid cases shows that they are primarily happening in the western region

Although COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have flattened in Colorado there are very different risks from county to county.

In the Denver area, new infections are dropping but on the Western Slope and other parts of the state with lower vaccination rates, they are increasing.

According to Talia Quandelacy, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health, "It’s particularly important for people in areas where relatively few others are vaccinated to get their shots as soon as possible and to wear masks until they’re fully protected. We’ll really start to see more local epidemics in less-vaccinated counties."

Statewide the total number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 trended up last week but ended up dropping over the weekend. As of yesterday afternoon, 320 people had been hospitalized with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and new admissions were down compared to the previous week.

It is in the western half of the state, where vaccination rates are lower, where most of the COVID-19 cases are happening. Ten counties are experiencing the equivalent of more than 100 cases for every 100,00 people, which is greater than four times the rate compared to the population in Denver.

As of last the counties with the highest rates of new cases were as follows:

  • Hinsdale: 488.4 cases per 100,000 people
  • Rio Blanco: 364.7
  • Moffat: 271.7
  • Las Animas: 207
  • Archuleta: 185.7
  • Routt: 167.6
  • Mesa: 142.6
  • Ouray: 141.9
  • Rio Grande: 106.8
  • Garfield: 104.7

Studies seem to be indicating that the delta variant may have accelerated the development of separate trends in other parts of the state even though scientists expected less-vaccinated areas would remain vulnerable longer and it is the most widespread in the western counties.
