Yesterday afternoon three people were killed in a shopping district. The shooting happened in Arvada's Olde town district which is seven miles northwest of downtown Denver that is known for its shopping, restaurants, and charm. Currently, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
According to Ed Brady, the deputy chief of the Arvada Police Department, police officers responded to a suspicious incident in Arvada's Olde Town Square. Around fifteen minutes after police responded a 911 call came in reporting that shots had been fired.
The suspected gunman and a veteran police officer were killed in the shooting alongside a "Samaritan" reported to have been shot by the gunman, was taken to the hospital, and passed away there.
As of now the names of the victims and suspect/suspects have not been released. Police officers kept from describing the circumstances of the shooting initially but have confirmed that no one else is thought to have been involved.
To honor the lives lost a large police presence lined up last night for a procession with residents lining the street holding flags.
There have been multiple high-profile shootings in Colorado this year. A month ago there was a shooting at a Colorado Springs birthday party where six lives were taken. Several months ago there was a shooting in Boulder where a gunman attacked a King Soopers grocery store, taking the lives of ten people including a police officer.
As of today, Colorado has the sixth-highest rate of public mass killings.
