Firestone Walker Brewing Company is celebrating women with a new collaborative craft beer launch from the Firestone Walker Propagator R&D Brewhouse in Venice, California: Talley Cat Sunflower IPA.
Talley Cat Sunflower was created in partnership between lifelong friends and brewers Matt Brynildson (of Firestone Walker) and Jennifer Talley who cut their teeth as aspiring home brewers and university students together and have now reunited over 20 years later for this new IPA. Talley and Brynildson met at a premier brewing school, Siebel Institute of Technology.
Jennifer Talley’s brewing career began in Utah as brewmaster at Squatters Pub Brewery in Salt Lake City. She honed her skills through a variety of positions at Salt Lake Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Russian River Brewing Company, and Auburn Alehouse in Auburn, California.
Talley is the recipient of more than 20 awards from the Great American Beer Festival® and World Beer Cup℠ and also a Cicerone Examiner, craft beer industry speaker, technical committee member for the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, as well as a national and international beer judge. Talley was awarded the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing in 2011. She is also the author of Session Beers: Brewing for Flavor and Balance, a book discussing the history of session beer, brewing, and recipes for session beers from various breweries.
Firestone shares the combination of Southern Hemisphere and Pacific Northwest hops (Riwaka, Idaho 7 and Simcoe) create a “tropical aroma of passion fruit, mango, and peach to bring that signature West Coast IPA punch”.
West Coast IPA’s are “traditionally known for their bold hop aroma, high bitterness and citrus/piney aroma and flavors”, according to Brewer Sam Tierney.
The Talley Cat Sunflower IPA beer launched on Tuesday, March 9th and will be available in a limited quantity for California residents at all Firestone Walker brewery locations and online at FirestoneBeer.com.
Representation in the craft beer industry is something that is still being grappled with. According to craftbeer.com, “77 percent of breweries were owned by men and only 9 percent of breweries owned by people of color. More than 90 percent of production staff were males while front-of-house staff, like bartenders or servers, showed a greater balance of a gender”.
The success of Talley is certainly paving the way for others.
