In a shocking accident, a young Californian mom tragically lost her life in Modesto's Beard Brook Park on July 8, 2023. The victim, 27-year-old Christine Chavez, was reportedly lying down in a weed-filled area of the park when a groundskeeper unknowingly ran over her with a lawnmower. Devastatingly, the worker only spotted Chavez's body after the horrific incident.

The aftermath of the incident deeply distressed her family, who discovered remnants of Chavez still at the scene. "There were many pieces of (her remains) around there and I called the police," said her father, Christopher Chavez, adding that pieces of her skull and some teeth were among the remains left behind.

At the time of the tragedy, Chavez, a mother to a nine-year-old daughter, was reportedly homeless. Her bereaved family is now taking care of her daughter and demanding justice.

Beard Brook Park had only just been acquired by E & J Gallo Winery a day before the accident. In their statement, the company confirmed that a landscaping contractor was performing weed abatement and fire prevention services on the day of the incident. They also extended their condolences to the Chavez family.

Grover Landscaping Services, the company operating the lawnmower, also issued a statement, stating that their operator discovered Chavez's body in a dry, overgrown area. The operator immediately contacted the Modesto Police Department, who declared Chavez deceased upon their arrival. Both companies have committed to cooperating with the investigation into Chavez's death.

Meanwhile, the tragedy has raised questions about the safety measures in place for park maintenance, with Chavez's brother-in-law Jose Zermeño suggesting potential negligence. Homeless advocacy organization We Are Not Invisible also critiqued Modesto's treatment of its homeless population in light of the accident.

Both Modesto police and Mayor Sue Zwahlen have apologized for Chavez's tragic death, referring to it as an accident. In response, Chavez's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Chavez's daughter and seek justice for Christine.
